What a rich man I would be today if I got a penny for every
person that has ever asked me what website hosting is. After
explaining to some people what it is, half of them get the
basic idea but most do not. Web hosting is not something
new and is not very difficult to understand however. This
is where this article comes in, but first we need to understand
what is involved in launching a web site.
There is three main steps to launching your own website.
Below we list the three main steps and then dive deeper into
what those steps are:
1. A Website designer to design your web
pages such as your index.html page.
2. A Domain name.
3. Web site hosting.
1. Website Designer:
Depending on how big you want your web site and on how many
pages you require, a website designer is the person that
will design your web pages in either HTML or flash.
Tip: A website developer is a person that does the programming
only and not the design work.
2. A Domain Name:
You need to register a domain name. A domain name is the
name that people type into the URL to locate your website.
A domain name is the address of your website and is similar
to the address of your residence or workplace.
Tip: You can get a number of different types of domain names
such as:
.co.za - South African website
.com - Commercial website
.net – Network website
.edu – Educational website
.gov – Government website
.org. - Organization website
3. Web Site Hosting:
Now that you got your web page's and
your website address, you will then need to store those
pages on a very powerful computer called a website hosting
server.
A web hosting server does exactly what the name suggests;
it hosts your website to the world. The web site hosting
server is connected 24\7 to the internet's backbone so that
you open for business throughout the day and night!
