In the following article, I am going to introduce a few basic website hosting jargons that you need to understand before we move on to the more advanced articles. This section is for the novice users wanting to learn more on website hosting, all the way up to professional website designers wanting a refresher course.

Traffic – If someone visits a company’s website, the data is sent from a specialized computer called a website hosting server. The website hosting server passes on the requested website to the client’s computer that requested to view the website. The amount of data that the website hosting server had to pass on to the client’s computer is called website hosting traffic.
The website hosting traffic may also include, emails sent and received. At the end of each month, all the data is added up and this is known as total ‘Monthly Traffic’

Domain Name - A Domain name is a unique name, in which to identify a website. It’s very similar to your residential address. If you want someone to visit your website you would give them your website address (in the same way as you would give your residential address to someone that wants to visit your house).

HDD\Disk Space – A website hosting server stores a website on what is known as a hard drive. You ‘rent’ some hard drive space on the website hosting server, in which to store your content (which is basically your entire website such as pictures, a database, html and writing located on the website)

PHP - Hypertext Preprocessor or PHP for short is a server side scripting language. It is very suitable for website development and website design as user can implement it into.

Website Hosting Server & Email Forwarding

Email Forwarding – Instead of collecting emails directly from a website hosting server, the website hosting server can pass on the email address to his domain to go to another email account hosted elsewhere. Here is an example, a client launches a new website called http://www.websitesrus.co.za the clients email address is yourname@websitesrus.co.za . The client has however got another email address that he has used for many years called yourname@domain.com . If you want all the mail destined to go to yourname@websitesrus.co.za to be redirected to go to yourname@domain.com then you will need to use ‘email forwarding’.
